A comprehensive guide to environmental and wildlife volunteer programs throughout the world.
This unique site-by-site guide profiles more than 300 programs where volunteers can work in a variety of activities involving conservation and study of wildlife. From the Fur Seal Project of the Earthwatch Institute in St. George Island, Alaska, or identifying and tracking wildlife in the Limpopo Nature Reserve, South Africa, to Blue World Institute's Adriatic Dolphin Project in Croatia, to the tracking program of the Open Minded Project in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand, readers will learn the best ways to "give back" and make the most positive environmental impact during their travels. Each entry includes a profile of the site and organization behind it, as well as location, contact information, category, costs, dates and duration, how to apply, and field notes that include any special concerns, requirements for participation, and suitability.

Ecotourism can provide opportunities to travel to exotic locations and be involved with rewarding projects, whether as part of an organized package tour or working in exchange for accommodations. Focusing on wildlife conservation, Brodowsky, who previously worked with the National Wildlife Federation on "Destination Wildlife", lists many different travel opportunities for all budgets and all types of travelers. The book is arranged geographically, with the majority of opportunities in North America. In addition to a description of the program, Brodowsky also includes its cost, required stay (some are only a week; others at least 30 days or more), and suitability (e.g., ideal for seniors, families, or the casual traveler or recommended only for those in top physical condition). VERDICT With programs ranging from observing rhinos and big cats in Africa to maintaining trails at wildlife refuges in the Midwest, this will be a helpful resource for those trying to figure out what is possible in ecotourism. This original travel book for adventure seekers is also appropriate for volunteerism or ecology collections.Margaret Heller, Dominican Univ. Lib., River Forest, IL
