What does it mean to be an accomplished, well-known African-American at the time of the first U.S. black president? Award-winning journalist and critic Elvis Mitchell seeks out the best and the brightest in the hope of turning a negative term from the last century--"black list"--into a positive phrase for the new century. In this companion piece to the print book and HBO documentary, Mitchell sets up each interview with a brief history and then delves right into the insightful and inspiring struggles of people like former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Reverend Al Sharpton, comedian Chris Rock, and others. He gently prods his subjects to reveal a variety of wisdom and experiences, including making it in the diamond-hard world of rock music with Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. R.O. Mitchell's project with photographer Greenfield was to “track the black experience in America and by doing so, to exhibit the wealth and variety in it.” Their interviews with 25 prominent African-Americans became a book and an 87-minute HBO documentary. (The audiobook trims back on contributors; although they are listed on the packaging, there are no chats with Def Jam Records founder Russell Simmons, Tuskegee airman William Rice or record producer Steve Stoute.) Mitchell introduces the book before each subject is given a few minutes to speak “at length about their wishes, their battles, their anxieties and fulfilling their goals.” There are no dull spots among the tightly edited monologues, just eloquent, engaging and inspiring speakers, including Toni Morrison, Chris Rock, Colin Powell, Faye Wattleton, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Zane, Al Sharpton and Louis Gossett Jr. The inspiring and illuminating voices are supported by a lulling musical score by Neal Evans. An Atria hardcover (reviewed online).

Journalist Elvis Mitchell teamed with photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders to create a stunning collection of portraits of successful African-Americans. The subjects range from political leaders to sports stars to entertainers--including the likes of Maya Angelou, Colin Powell, and Slash--but lower-profile cultural and business leaders may be the most fascinating. Mitchell's intriguing introduction explains his objective: a modern, new "black list" loaded with power and inspiration. In this audiobook version of the book and documentary film, three narrators read the transcripts from selected interviews. Although capably read, the conversational interviews are sometimes awkward due to their verbatim delivery. Lacking the exquisite photographs, the listener may feel this anthology is not ideally suited to the audiobook format. N.M.C. (c) AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

Created by photographer Greenfield-Sanders and entertainment critic Mitchell (currently editor-at-large at Interview), this handsome collection of original portraits and essays, companion to the HBO documentary, celebrates 25 successful black Americans, including Toni Morrison, Reverend Al Sharpton, Serena Williams and Colin Powell. Though beautifully reproduced photos capture both "formality and familiarity," the honest, insightful essays are the heart of the book, personal narratives written by the subjects themselves. Greenfield-Sanders means to "track the black experience in America" while "exhibiting the wealth of variety in it," and his subjects bring together a wide range of experiences: Zane describes her reasons behind writing erotic literature; Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recalls the first time he met Miles Davis; Faye Wattleton, former president of Planned Parenthood, discusses the intersection of her religion and her commitment to advancing freedom. Affixed in a crisp layout, this volume should make a well-crafted gift for readers (of any color) looking for inspiration.
