Tilda Sherwood was born into one of the most powerful magical families in all of Witchingdom, but she's a rare outr�--powerless. Even so, an executive council of witches sends Gil Connolly to check that Tilda really is a dud. Gil has a secret power himself: he is a du�l, and his magic can make people fall in love. When a series of explosive high-magic events occur, Gil discovers Tilda's secret, and he's the only one who can help her unravel the mess her magic has made. Flynn's (Mansplainer) contemporary romance is unique in format; both protagonists break the fourth wall and speak directly to readers in alternating chapters. The sex scenes are spicy, and the humor usually hits the mark. Unfortunately, there's little chemistry between the protagonists, and the plot is slow to build up speed. VERDICT Flynn's fans will enjoy this detour into paranormal romance, but regular readers of the genre won't be impressed.--Heather Miller Cover

Flynn (Anger Bang) gets her Witchton series off to a spicy start with this jam-packed paranormal rom-com. In a world where witches are so accepted that eye-of-newt muffins are perfectly normal bakery fare, Tilda Sherwood is “an outré,” the rare witch born with no magical powers whatsoever. She’s the black sheep of her family and constantly worries about failing and embarrassing them. Her nemesis in small-town Wrightsville, Va., is Gil Connolly, a handsome and powerful witch who can’t seem to keep away from Tilda. Much to Tilda’s distress, these two keep getting set up on blind dates by well-meaning friends. Gil has a secret, though: he’s working to get his powerful family out of exile, a mission which entails spying on Tilda to discover if she is something more than just an outré. Meanwhile, when Tilda accidentally sets a curse on her family, she turns to Gil for help. While the plot is at times a bit rushed and the solutions convenient, there’s plenty of charm in the wise-cracking characters, hot-as-hell chemistry, and pun-filled worldbuilding (their social media is WitchyGram). Thanks to her godmother's matchmaking skills, she has been set up on four blind dates, but unfortunately each time, when her date showed up, he turned out to be her nemesis, Gil Connolly, who is gorgeous in the Indiana Jones mode. Gil is actually on a secret mission, working clandestinely for two opposing organizations vying for power, and is not necessarily a friend to the Sherwoods. When Tilda's extended family is in peril, she enlists the aid of Gil and friends from her magical-misfits support group in a bold caper. Flynn's enemies-to-lovers romp is replete with the titillating details of Tilda's and Gil's escalating relationship. Fans of fast-paced, sexy romances in magically transformed contemporary settings will enjoy this clever, breezy rom-com.
