Despite connotations the word homesteader may evoke, ingredients such as yerba mate, nutritional yeast, and tahini indicate this book's focus on modern California fare with Japanese, Indian, Spanish, and Mexican influences. Burnside, former owner/chef of Carmel Cafe and Cafe Amphora in California, introduces vegetarian dishes like Samurai Breakfast and Veggie Loaf. Meat eaters will enjoy Garden Herb and Lemon Chicken, a simple recipe for preparing a whole chicken. The book includes a glossary, list of ingredients to have on hand, sprouting chart, and metric conversion chart, but a list of resources to locate ingredients would have been helpful. This will appeal to those interested in local, organic cooking.
