Lisa Lutz's debut mystery, The Spellman Files, featuring the eponymous PI family, hit the New York Times best-seller list thanks to its uproarious sense of humor and lovable cast of quirky characters. While investigating her parents' neighbor—because she's sure that he's making women disappear—our brash heroine Izzy Spellman gets thrown into jail. And if she can find her way out of that little problem, that'll only be the beginning of her troubles.

The dysfunctional Spellmans, private investigators, are on the rampage again. Isabel (Izzy) tells the story of her four times (however brief) in jail, her older brother David's complete behavioral change, her younger sister's annoying habits, and the other important people in her life. Izzy's curse is that she regards everyone as suspect and, therefore, spies on and records them, often coming to the wrong conclusions that sometimes get her into trouble. Is this really what she wants to do with her life? Christina Moore is a good match for this freewheeling, funny, whacky family. Her voices are character driven, and she has a comedic facility that works well with the story. S.S.R. (c) AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
