The good news: Bobby survived her Undead school trip. Bad news: her best mate, Smitty, is missing. Bobby knows she's got to find him even if it means risking it all and going out into the starving-zombie-infested wastelands again. Even if it means taking fellow survivors including a couple of old frenemies along for the ride. And even if the zombies are not the only ones who are chasing them this time.

Gr 9 Up-Bobby wakes up from a six-week coma in a military hospital where she learns she was one of only four survivors of a bus crash. She is told her mother is dead and discovers geeky Pete and Alice and another boy named Russ are the other survivors. Her friend Smitty is missing, or worse. The hospital is overrun with zombies, and the four survivors must escape and run for their lives. Bobby discovers clues in her cell phone leading her to believe her mother is still alive-and possibly Smitty, too. The four set out to follow the clues, drawing on Pete's decoding skills to decipher some of them, to find Smitty and Bobby's Xanthro-affiliated mom. Agents of Xanthro keep coming after them as well as the zombies-who were after all created by Xanthro. Amy Schindler narrates with an expressive voice, using subtle voice changes for the different characters to help listeners know who is speaking. The dark humor and teen snarkiness lighten the considerable horror and gore. VERDICT This is a fast-paced, worthy sequel that will have listeners absorbed from start to finish.-Cynthia Ortiz, Hackensack High School, NJ
